Put your money where your mouth is.

An excellent article in the SF Bay Guardian about Socially Responsible Investments (SRI). It's a very simple idea. Don't buy US Treasury Bonds. Don't invest in companies that are defense contractors. At first you might think, well, what does that leave us? There are a lot of alternatives, such community development banks, which gives loans to local projects like housing. These banks often give 3-4% which in todays climate of .5% on a savings account beats current rates.

It's kind of like those anti-drug commercials that claim, "drugs support terrorism," well so does your 401K, your major bank, etc. Looks like I'm going to have to do alot more research and planning.

Some quick links:

Green Money Journal -provides a list of all the SRI funds

Working Asssets - provides telephone service and a credit card where a portion of your bill goes towards socially conscious orgs.

Community Invest - a list of community investment organizations, credit unions and other funds and services.
