I am my own worst enemy in terms of surprising me. First off, I notice little things that seem odd or don't add up and if given enough time I tend to piece together. And two, I'm a moving target. It's rather hard to find me in one spot for very long and it's fairly rare that I'm just at home.
But I must say my friends are getting better at surprising me and that this year they are getting much better at it. Though after they surprised me there were a few "off" things in the past couple of weeks that made me go "hmmm..." such as my one cousin emailing me asking me how I knew about the surprise, and my sister asking about an invite list and wanting to know which ones on the list were my friends and which ones were the Fiance's friends and when she asked why, she told me to humor her. I'm also way too busy thinking about all these other things to connect the dots anymore.
We went to Coryo Korean BBQ in Oakland. It's not so much the meat that makes Korean BBQ it's all those little side condiment items they set out for you: seaweed, various kimchee spicy stuff, dilis/salted fish, mung beans, etc. When we got there I was made to don a "Miss Bachelorette" sash complete with red sequence ala Miss America style. It was a small gathering, couple of friends, my mom, a few cousins, one of them who is getting married in November.
The food for 6 was more for like 16! But all of it quite good. I'll find out next week if after all this eating I'll still fit into my dress.
Afterwards we went to the Korean karoke club next door and took up one of the rooms painted bright red with disco lights that went with the music and a booming sound system with two mics. The remote was gi-normous and all in Korean, with only the start, stop, and reserve buttons with some small translation to let us know what they were for. Yes, it's saran wrapped.
We picked a wide variety of songs. Girl anthems: "I will survive," "Believe" by Cher, "Natural Woman", "Nine to Five". Votes for the saddest song/sappiest love song ever: "Open Arms," "At Seventeen," "To Sir with Love", "Annie's Song", "Lady in Red". Then the "men" songs, "YMCA," "It's Raining Men," "Born to be Wild," "Stand by Your Man", "Kung Fu Fighting" and TLC's "No Scrub". Plus alot of just upbeat feel good songs, "All Star", "I'm a Believer", "Brown Eyed Girl". Most of the Roy Orbison songs: "Only the Lonely" "Pretty Woman" and one more that I forget.
We learned that Josh Groban's, "You Raise Me Up" is basically a re-lyriced "Danny Boy". And yes, we sang both of them.
They had just about everything including a wide variety of hard core heavy metal including a couple of Marilyn Mansen songs we weren't exactly sure how to sing, or if you sing them at all. Quite a few rap songs by Eminem, Nelly, Coolio, that we didn't try either.
The 3 hours we were there just flew by! But I think after 3 hours we had sung just about all the songs we would have wanted to sing.
What's interesting is that the few days after various people asked if I was going to have a stripper or something like that at my bachelorette party with various voices saying how I definitely should and others who said strippers are just nasty. According to the Fiance's sister, there is a true art to it and if we were in LA, she would have gotten me a true artiste in male dancing. Then again if we were in LA, we might find ourselves at a porn filming too. I could go either way with it actually, but I'm not quite as penis obsessed as the products on this bachelorette site. And I wouldn't necessarily go ga-ga over any man who takes off his clothes, there's the attitude and the look. In the end, I actually do want to see the artiste in him, because in the end, just about everything that's done well is an art for it to be done well.
And who knows, I might get kidnapped again for something more adult rated. At this point I'll never know. Besides, that's what Vegas is for.
