excellent movies (rented or in the theaters) for the long weekend

Though I don't think I'll have much time to watch movies this weekend, here's a list of the recent ones we've enjoyed. I think I picked up my dad's habit of getting those 2 for $20 pre-viewed dvd sales at Blockbuster. Each time I go visit them, my dad's got even more dvds. Some are kind of stashed away and hidden (as if my mother is not going to find out that he bought more dvds again).

Anyway, here we go:

Kill Bill v2 not as much fighting as the first, true, but the fighting here is still rather enjoyable not so much because of the moves (you want moves, watch hong kong kung fu flicks) but for the emotion and the storyline that propel the fighting. it's not fighting just to fight, characters actually grow and get resolution from it. watch uma cheat death several times over.

Something's Gotta Give it's been a long time since I watched a movie that 1) had two characters in more than 2 minutes of consecutive dialogue and 2) had characters that could hold volumes of conversation with their eyes. of course, only jack and diane can pull it off, every nervous stance, every angle they turn their heads, the subtle expressions that convey the world.

Rushmore a dark romantic comedy about a 15 year old boy who pulls off incredible stunts by negotiating his way through life, yet falls for a teacher who breaks his heart. a bit of a rollercoaster as he makes and breaks people's worlds. fortunately he finds redemption, cuz he's a real asshole of a guy, near the end of the movie you'd kill him yourself. it's a miracle bill murray's character doesn't throttle the life out of him.
