engage

We bought Star Trek: The Original Series, Season 3 on sale at Costco. We watched just about every TOS episode in reruns growing up.

Tonight we watched the restored Pilot, called, "The Cage" with Captain Christopher Pike and the Talosians, otherwise known as the butt-brain aliens. The episodes are still quite engaging, but it's hard not to have side comment banter. It's just too hard to resist. Though at times, I have to say, the dialogue can come closer to a bad porn movie without the sex, but perhaps that how Gene Roddenberry could get the discussion of sex under the tv censor's radar.

I mean the plot of the pilot was about Capt Pike getting kidnapped by the Talosians to be Adam and Eve. And when he didn't like the Eve, a blonde, they beamed down a red head and a brunette, played by Majel Barrett, the first Number One, sorry Will Riker. So one lone guy with a blonde, a redhead, and a brunette, which one would he have picked as Eve? All three of them of course! [Thus the beginning of the reasons why Star Trek's prime demographic has often been young guys.] But rather than be played into some alien slave baby factory, like all good captains, he heads back to his ship to go boldly where no man has gone before.

Then there's the rest of the episodes with James T. Kirk, the captain who ALWAYS got the girl. Plenty of peanut gallery fodder there! He really put the "western" in Star Trek. A captain always willing to duke it out.

But as much as I make fun of the show while watching it, I'm still a huge fan! I love the technicolor, the action, the special effects! I love the goofiness, and the subject matters they delved into! And we'll probably watch these discs front, back and in between before it's all done.

Hi Gura,

have you had a chance to check out Wil Wheaton's blog yet? (http://wilwheaton.typepad.com/)

He's a good writer and has done memory-reviews of some epis of ST:NG for TV Squad. His post today also includes a credited writer of an epi's reaction to Where No One Has Gone Before.

Anyway, thought you'd be interested.
